Viewers settling down to Mary Berry’s Easter Feast programme welled up as the nation’s favourite baker took her grandchildren to visit the grave of her late son.

William Hunning, Mary’s son with husband Paul, died in a car crash in 1989 at the age of 19. His sister, Annabel, was also in the accident, but survived.

The Great British Bake Off judge opened up about what Easter meant to her as a child and how her family celebrates after William’s death.

Mary says, ‘The lead-up to Easter is a time full of happy memories – from my holidays as a child in Bath to when my own children were young.

‘But, for our family, it is also a time of sadness, as we remember the loss of our son, William, 27 years ago, when he was just 19 years old.’

Mary, who visited the grave with Annabel, her husband Paul and three grandchildren, then spoke about Spring flowers and snowdrops, leaving viewers emotional.

Later in the programme, the Bake Off star visited the Archbishop of Canterbury, who lost his daughter in 1983, and the pair spoke about what it is like to lose a child.
