“While WEPA’s work and reach is hyperlocal, it is grounded in the unwavering belief of a people's inherent right to self-determination and revolutionary struggle against white supremacy, capitalism and imperialism. Our commitment stems from an intimate knowledge of the legacy of colonization, genocide and white supremacy in the Carribbean. From the first Spanish and Portuguese ships in the 1400s, to modern campaigns to destabilize Latin American governments, we are all too familiar with Western tactics (and those backed by Western powers) that dispossess a people of their land and sovereignty. Equally, we affirm that our ancestors were not passive victims of oppression, but rather became warriors who fought for their freedom. For many of us, that fight continues today. In their honor, we have a responsibility to study our history and continue the collective work of decolonization and liberation.”___Click the link to read WEPA’s full Statement of Solidarity and additional resources to take action.http://eepurl.com/iChPas___WEPA is a resident-led action group committed to strengthening Latine power and presence in local efforts for change in Waterbury, CT.IG: @wepa_ct

Last week, our team at Rise Consulting was honoured to sit with the Honourable Eugene Creighton from the Kainai Nation to learn more about making Treaty, from a Blackfoot perspective. Honourable Creighton, a Blackfoot language speaker, is a Former Court of King's Bench Judge and is currently Senior Counsel Walsh LLP.At the core of Treaty, there are three core principles:Atsimma’pii, a sacred undertaking that involvesAtsimoyisskaan, sacred speech and prayer andAtsimsska’sinni, humble and sacred actions. Sometimes Treaty and peacemaking involves apologies, amends and a commitment to peace, balance and order. Relationships is essential to modern Treaty. These principles also illuminate how broken Treaties, which were made in good faith to share land, avoid war, define land rights and secure Blackfoot consent for settler encroachment have such an impact on trust, fair dealings and advocacy for Indigenous self-determination and sovereignty today. #IndigenousRights #BlackfootCulture #Peacemaking #TraditionalKnowledge #TreatyRights #CulturalPreservation #FirstNations
